Madeline Kenney presents her debut full-length album, which she wrote, arranged and recorded entirely herself and mostly at home. Night Night At The First Landing might initially come across as a straightforward indie songwriter album, but that would be before Kenney’s wild guitar starts properly flaring up. Bloody hell I wasn't even going to give this a listen based on the sales notes but the opener 'Don't Forget' sets the tone for something that is way better than the words used to describe it. 'Don't Forget' is rather incredible - a moonlit serenade that has lashings of intricate Durutti Column style guitar, found sounds, child warbles and finally Kenney's hazy voice floating on top. Reminds me of both Catpower and last years still enjoyed Eagle/Deer record. 'Rita' and 'Witching Hour' are more like what I imagined the record to be. They are interesting slightly grungy pop songs which reminds me of stuff of the last Waxahatchee album. What is catching my ear though is the floaty voice of Kenney and the dreamy production with hints of (yikes) War on Drugs in it's widescreen nature
Kenney veers between this style of big pop and more esoteric, fractured sound pieces which suggests a restless spirit- this is anything but your standard 10 track album of songs even if her songs are often relatively straightforward edging towards radio friendly. There are hints of Laura Veirs at her poppiest particularly on the sky scraping 'Big One' which showcases Kenney's odd lyrical utterances that seem somewhat at odds with the glacial music she presents. But this is an album of opposites. It's out on Toro Y Moi's Company records but often recalls Julee Cruise singing with Cocteau Twins. You should check it.
