Sophie Allison - Soccer Mommy to you lot - describes her music as ‘chill but kinda sad’. She’s right you know. Having upped several albums to Bandcamp throughout her teenage years, the 19-year-old’s persistence and knack for a good tune has been rewarded with a compilation-plus-some-new-bits on Fat Possum. Frankie Cosmos, Trust Fund and Girlpool are the obvious touchstones.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 02 August 2017
Sounding so similar to this weeks Caroline Says record that at times I'm forgetting I flipped the disc over this is the spindly work of 19 year old Sophie Allison who ploughs a similar path of simple but effective guitar lines, sweet and melancholic vocals and distinctly lo-fi production. She has a very '90s sense of songwriting that recalls such past experts as Liz Phair and Juliana Hatfield and though it lacks the heartfelt maturity of the Caroline Says record, we get a series of charming vignettes that explore the life and worries of a young person. This also has a melancholic autumn charm that recalls the tree-lined melodies of the likes of Death Cab For Cutie particularly on the lovely, lush 'Out Worn'.
It's a nice record of indie pop that is a snapshot into Allison's world - she has a straightforward unpretentious lyrical delivery that suggests you are ear wigging into her diaries. Sing your life - as someone once said. Not the finished article yet but this promises much.
