Soundtrack to Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror episode San Junipero, from the fourth series. Scored by Clint Mansell whose notable work includes Moon, High-Rise, as well as a lot for Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, The Fountain, Pi). Here he plays with the post 80s nostalgia of the film, heavily mixing synths with orchestral arrangements with a dark underbelly.

Mansell’s signature sound is instantly recognisable from the very first piece, which haunts the mind with its restraint, melancholy, and nostalgia. There are only ten short pieces for this hour-long show, directed by Owen Harris, but it is easy to get lost in its overall aesthetic and sentiment, especially since some of the pieces remind me of The Fountain, one of my all-time favourite soundtracks by Mansell (something about those chord progressions in “Waves Crashing on Distant Shores of Time”).
