It's really hard to figure out who is the worst.. Noel or Liam Gallagher. Musically both seem firmly stuck in the world of latte period Oasis with no hopes of getting out. But I assume this is fine amongst their fan base of feather cuts. No Damon Albarn style working with Malawi musicians here - just good old fashioned choooooones...like the ones you heard on latter day Oasis records.
If Noel is mashed potato then Liam is thickly cut chips. His music is marginally more daring but that's like comparing the Dooleys to Manhattan Transfer. 'As You Were' is a highly compressed album of songwriting tightened by working with 'in the biz' songwriters. They've not sorted his lyrics - he's on his own there- but musically there's a few snazzy moves inserted in such as the nice double chorus of 'Greedy Soul' and there's no doubt that the Liam Gallagher, Greg Kurstin, Andrew Wyatt, Andrew Sidney Fox, Michael Tighe co-write 'Wall of Glass' was a surefooted comeback single that helped remind people why they liked Oasis in the first place.
Otherwise it's pleasant Lennon-esque ballads and things that sound a bit like 'Don't Look Back In Anger' ('For What It's Worth' is especially guilty)....amid glammy rockers that showcase *that* voice which is like an especially gritty piece of elastic. If only he could find a songwriter that struggles to sing his own songs. Seriously though if I had to listen to one of the brothers (and Paul wasn't an option) I'd probably choose this. It's fairly listenable throughout and shorn of it's awful lyric and shouted middle eight 'When I'm In Need' is rather good until it gets hopelessly lost amid a wail of guitar solos. There's moments where you forget yourself for a minute and think this is ok...but then comes another Beatles or T-Rex reference and you remember that a sure sign of madness is doing the same thing over and over again.
