For anyone that’s been living under a rock for the past two years - Gqom Oh! Is a label dedicated to to the Gqom music of Durban, South Africa. You could lose days of your life tracking down this stuff online and downloading it. At this point - the label's fifth release, I have pretty good faith they’re curating and presenting the cream of it for wider consumption and DJ use.

TLC Fam are a 23 strong crew that hail from the township of Newlands West. Their Gqom style is heavier on the vocal chants and loops than other artists I’ve heard within the scene, and they achieve a distinctive style with their multi-layered kick drums which they call ‘Taxi Kicks’. Apparently designed to be played in Taxis across the region. There are five cuts on the EP, and each one is just totally infectious - you don’t consciously move to this music, the music moves you. Without even realising it, parts of the body appear to be moving involuntarily, like the rhythms have taken control. Ultimately that’s what you want from dance music. Like any dance music, Gqom relies on a formula and this EP doesn’t shift dramatically from the template of tight minimal rhythms and dark atmospherics, but TLC Fam certainly sound like they’re carving out their own space within the genre.

While so many people in electronic music seem obsessed with synth modules and analogue hardware, these guys prove that all you need is a copy of Fruity Loops to create tracks that will sound explosive on a dancefloor.
