- Dramatic Sunset by AEVA

Debut release right here from AEVA, a project from animator Dan Jacobs who is involved with the likes of Glad Hand and Makeness, on a brand new London-based label, so much newness, wow. I had the pleasure of catching his live show at Leeds’ CHUNK earlier in the year and I was promptly whisked away into a world of slippery beats and fragmented recordings.
On this 12”, especially the A side title track, you’ll be greeted by warm evening chords a la Aphex Twin’ ‘Rhubarb’ before a gritty 4x4 stomp kicks in, propelling you towards some strange warps and mangles of said beat, possibly making ‘Dramatic Sunset’ one of the techno tracks of the year. Soft-but-hard. Gotta love the cheez name too. Oh, who else to compare this to, umm, I guess folks like Jon Hopkins and Clark but a little more adventurous? Over to the B and the first tune is a slower, more uneven breakbeat chopper with nothing but cavernous echoes for company, with the same perfect level of mangle towards the second half as A1. B2 captures a moment of forlorn beauty into some wavy pitch-shifting chords to excellent effect.
