Imagine Alan Lomax travelled in a time machine and visited the era of the peak of the bubonic plague in Europe sometime during the 1300’s. He buried his tapes in a time capsule and we’re now listening to the rotting, eroded recordings of the bubbling of toxic pools and streams. The tortured muttering and burbling of poor unfortunate disease victims huddled around a local minstrel, plucking strings, playing dirges while the community groan in agony around him - as he involuntarily locks into sparse repetitive phrases as his mind decays. Meanwhile the sound of collapsing villages crumbling into piles of rubble. This is Dan Johannsson’s bleak, apocalyptic, black death folk/tape music.
