Here is another psych/kraut release from the good people at Deep Distance. This time it’s from Gothenburg, Sweden based Daniel Fridlund Brand who uses all kinds of influences (Ashra, Harmonia, Miles Davis, Spacemen 3, Broadcast etc) to make an album which is woozy, organic and otherworldly.

Right. So. Brass tacks time: this is a krautrock album by a man named Daniel Brandt. There is already a man by this name, making krautrock -- which, in my opinion, should give you some idea of how oversaturated the market is for shiny, self-perpetuating electronica. I’m pretty sure they aren’t the same person. Did Daniel Brandt of FREE / SLOPE fame have to add his middle name, which is Fridlund, into the mix because of all this? Does the other Daniel Brandt, who made the gorgeous ‘Eternal Something’, know this other guy exists? Have I just done a really poor amount of research? Next week on NCIS, my friends.
That’s enough unfulfilled detective work; it’s time to bask. Making luxury bedroom pop that shimmers like an open window letting the sun pour in, Brandt’s music focuses more on how loudly and proudly its synths can beam than anything. Its beats are laid back in the extreme, focused in the way a person achieving nirvana by lying down in the snuggest position is. His guitar solos meander with the wandering scent of weed as synth chords hold it all up, the most active and sunny element of his sound, a lethal combination of caffeine and summer sun.
The sound on this record is so laid back it’s lulling me into the great outdoors (read: a parking lot on an estate of light industrial), its synths mingling with guitars jangling and sun-baked, Brandt even introducing sax melodies worthy of Destroyer’s ‘80s revival. His flat, serviceable beats serve for a record of rather expansive krautrock, the kind that certainly goes beyond the call of duty of bedroom pop. A worthy beam of light for those who love to wah.
