Devastatingly beautiful, introspective, ethereal avant dream/drone-pop from Istanbul’s Ekin Üzeltüzenci. ‘Ghosts Inside’ is the Turkish artist's sixth full-length, and her second for The Helen Scarsdale Agency, following 2016’s ‘Being Near’.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have spent a fair amount of time with this album over the past coupla weeks, and it just gets me every time. From the opening piano that recalls Coil’s ‘Ether’, her intimate vocals feel so close, as though whispered directly into the ear - the words are barely decipherable, and yet, we still get a real sense of what she’s communicating. She really lets us right inside her heart and mind, yet isn't quite willing to give it all away, as some of the narrative remains partially obscured. This really adds to the intriguing mystique and haunting atmosphere of the record. An overwhelming sense of sadness pervades, which is profoundly affecting, and this isn’t just limited to her vocals - her ambient soundscapes, guitar, fragile melodies, electronics, f/x and field recordings weep throughout. There’s a real element of catharsis, as she channels the distress of family illness, an extinguished romance, and the socio-political climate of her home into her music - transforming the heartache and depression into something beautiful -- and ‘Ghosts Inside’ is a real diamond. Fans of lovesliescrushing, Roe Enney, and Grouper should certainly check this out.
