ELS is the solo project of Edward Simpson of Circuit Breaker fame delivering his first slice of magnetic joy, or more likely magnetic doom, on new (and possibly his) label Gateway. Mastered by Stephen Bishop (Basic House/Opal Tapes).

There are certainly some downcast electronic gloom tunes on here. It’s like you’ve taken Throbbing Gristle and The Haxan Cloak and smeared them together with your hands, eventually pressing your digits into some cassette reels for human ears. Wind tunnel melodies combine with beats reminiscent of early Portishead playing in a cathedral, with a bunch of white noise wisps layered on top as the icing on this troubled cake.

It’s quite a short tape - I’ve whizzed through to side B. Maybe that’s what happens when you’re having ‘fun’. NR listeners (and employees) have a weird idea of fun though. Phil’s only having fun when a Shellac album or Geoff Barrow soundtrack is playing. Anyway, this actually tiptoes on dark, subdued techno on the second side, but it’s like Vatican Shadow’s techno rather than Surgeon. Proper murk.
