Liam McConaghy’s Microdeform project lays between ambient, exploratory and cacophonous. Layers of statically charged loops, tape bends and vinyl fuzz, cloaking minimal instrumental improvisations. Think Leyland Kirby woozy-ness but with teeth. Originally only available on cassette, now made available on CD via Aphelion Editions.

Yes! Oh yes! Finally, this woozy and fuzzy little beauty is now on CD, having previously only been available as a cassette release. And cassettes… who wants them, eh?
Liam McConaghy’s exploratory transmissions as Microdeform have been reaching us since 2012’s Mortlake but it’s here, on Neural Regression, that he reaches the apotheosis of his space-excavating granular sound. Layers of found sound, improvised instrumentals and looped snatches of classical and jazz records are carefully painted over each other until a constantly shifting soundscape is achieved. The listening experience is akin to floating on the calmest of oceans one minute, only to get sucked into turbulence and flirtations with suddenly materialising whirlpools the next. It’s simultaneously hypnotic, cacophonous, and thrillingly intense. I’d mention Leyland Kirby at this point but really, nothing has excited me like this record for many a month.
Anyway, getting lost in these sounds isn’t a bad way to start my day -- I don’t know what you’re doing with your day but I hope it continues as blissfully as mine has begun. What? You’re just finishing? That’s awesome! High five! Only 50 of these in the world! The cd is housed in a screen-printed metallic sleeve with a very nice double-sided colour card to complete the hazily transportative picture! Lovely.
