NYC's proud lineage of jangle nods in approval as Rips make a chiming rock record full of watery guitar hooks and ramshackle virtuosity. Recorded at a scruffy fidelity with a half-snarly, half-sad vocal clamouring its way through the riffs, they make the kinda summer sentimentality you'll like as fans of Horsebeach, Hoops and Beach Fossils.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 13 June 2017
Is this familiar because it's really good or because we've played it in the office at some point and it's infected my soul? Anyway let me tell you about the tracks I have available to me. Initial reports would suggest that this will appeal to fans of late '70s New York sorts like Richard Hell and Television. 'Delay' is an insta-classic teak finished slice of rock and roll with a pulverising new wave feel. 'Losing 2' has even more of a swagger with some Stonesy riffs growling away 'neath some don't-give-a-shit vocals. I've seen the Feelies bandied around as an influence and it's on 'Malibu Entropy' where I hear that familiar jangle (also see Real Estate).
Rips are a harder edged proposition. A proper rock band that don't mind at all that they've listened to a lot of Felt and the Velvet Underground. The album has an immediacy that is refreshing in these days of indistinct jangling. At times the nascent youthful REM spring to mind in the chiming guitars and melodic bass lines. Excellent college rock.
