Keyboards-and-beats producer Kiefer is from California and his actual real name is Kiefer Shackelford. Brilliant. He apparently has the dazzling piano skills to match. His first LP Kickinit Alone is the next natural progression in a lineage traversing jazz and hip hop. Expect the warm sounds of tape hiss and the bluesy swing of his Rhodes. Also, many capitalised vowels in the track titles.

My biggest thank you of the week is to whoever wrote the words "lovely smooth jazzy vibes" on a post it note on the front of this debut full length from the brilliantly named Kiefer Shackelford. Boy sure knows how to tinkle those ivories and match to warm sunny LA vibes with lazy J Dilla influenced hip-hop beats and warm rhodes piano. His music has a raw unfinished feel that reminds me of the earlier Mahatma X album but this has a lighter jazzier feel with nods to Madlib, Flying Lotus and Taylor McFerrin.
This has a super-jazzy feel especially when he gets that piano out, the stuttering clipped pieces recall a raw and chilled Thundercat where the piano rather than the bass is the significant instrument. No vocals either - pure instrumental bliss. Got to be good for any warm summer days we are due.
