Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa bring together their varied musical experiences on this collaborative record, ending up with a bright and rich swirl of busy musics. Are Euphoria has tropical guitars, hand percussion, ecstatic vocals, surreal looped samples, and a dense tangle of melodies and counter-melodies, rhythms and counter-rhythms. Delicious! Out on Thrill Jockey.

8/10 Jamie Staff review, 28 June 2017

Could there be a more Thrill Jockey combination than this? Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa have combined talents once more following 2014’s ‘Savage Imagination’. The results are in, and they’re spectacular. Are Euphoria is the title and the record takes that emotion as the lead and follows it through to its logical conclusion. Music in Japanese is, after all, often clearly distilled into a combination of two notions: ‘sound’ and ‘enjoyment’. Here we should discover the overlap, sounds like fun.

Dustin filters his dazzling guitar and effervescing drums through bubbling loops and somehow, with Takako, creates a coherent tapestry out of all these coruscating sounds and wildly imaginative ideas. This style is highlighted beautifully on third track ‘Zaaab’: dense polyrhythms, bursts of guitar, fizzing synths, joyous vocals from the pair in tandem. That’s one deadly marimba, baby. Wong and Minekawa -- like Cornelius -- each have melodic genius running through their blood, and it’s Takako’s soaring vocal that lifts the spirits into the stratosphere. Dustin, if you’re reading this, you’re sounding peachy too. The interplay of sound textures, shifting timbres and energies on ‘Yaikele Ya Ma’ is particularly gorgeous.

It’s a dizzying rush of kaleidoscopic sounds and harmonic clatterings, this record. Now I’m feeling like 7-year-old Jamie after too much sherbet and I need a sit down. Away from music. At home. Amazing in well-measured doses.
