Spirit Of Peace by Popol Vuh

Popol Vuh’s Spirit Of Peace was used in part by Werner Herzog as the soundtrack to his The Dark Glow Of The Mountains, where it's gorgeous sense of spiritual yearning fitted the picture well. And yet this rich album has been out of print since its 1985 release! Thankfully One Way Static have produced a double vinyl reissue edition, which comes with extra bonus tracks. Edition of 700.

Probably the last great Popol Vuh record, this reissue is most welcome, although it still falls short of the brilliant work in the 1970s. It starts with 'We know about the need', from the original soundtrack to "Gasherbrun, die leuchtende Berg", Werner Herzog's 1984 documentary about Reinhold Messner. It's a track that features heavenly vocals in a similar style to those that can be found on much of their late 70s work, and is just wonderful. The next three tracks on this vinyl reissue are 3 versions of 'Spirit of Peace' which appear to be the same versions released on the excellent 'Kailash' box set on Soul Jazz Records. Beautiful piano pieces and good to see all three versions here, rather than just the one that was included on the original cd release. 'Song of the Earth' features the chanting vocals most Popol Vuh fans are so familiar with, alongside the spiritual guitar sound that carries them wonderfully along. 'Take The Tension High' closes the LP and is a near 20 minute epic, and gloriously uplifting. Side D is silk screened and there's an obi strip too, so it's fair to say this is a lovingly created reissue of an LP that has been out of print for a very long time. If you're a Popol Vuh fan you need this.
