LA singer-songwriter, Brainfeeder associate and Build An Ark founder Gaby Hernandez presents her third LP, Spirit Reflection. Expect a serene blend of electronics, acoustic instrumentation and rich vocal harmonies with that typically refreshing and breezy West Coast feel. Check the guests lining up here, too: Kamasi Washington, Lapalux, Kelis... the list goes on. Peterson approved of course.

6/10 Clinton Staff review, 20 June 2017

Please let this be good before I start crying. I *think* it is. I'll be ok won't I?

The opening track from this Brainfeeder acolyte is certainly super. It sounds like Laetitia Sadier singing over the sort of electronics that are inspired solely by palm trees. However the next one 'Baobab Tree' is not what I signed up to. It's twee exotica with all the panache of that song Zooey Deschanel sang with Brian Wilson on his last album... i.e very Jimmy Buffett. The presence of Kamasi Washington, Lapalux and Kelis suggested to me something more down the jazz-tronics route but what we get is more a light jazz-inflected bossa nova full of warm vibes, sunny day drifting and the sort of horns that can only be digested with large amounts of ice cream.

Her voice is a syrupy delight and there are some moments which catch my ear such as the staccato and unique 'Entranced' which was performed with Kamasi Washington but there are too many moments which sounds like the Carpenters go bossa nova. Fine for a warm days but not what I wanted. Not her fault I suppose. Might go and have that cry.
