First ever reissue, Discogs is gonna go nuts. Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins has gone under many aliases (Channel One, Output, Infiniti), M500 was a solo project in 1993 and teamed up with berliners Moritz von Oswald, Thomas Fehlmann as 3MB. Jazz Is The Teacher was a breakthrough collaboration that defined the Detroit and Berlin sounds.

Any techno fiend worthy of their Transmat slippers can tell you that ‘Jazz Is The Teacher’ is a techno classic. Originally released on 12” back in 1993 on Metroplex, and now freshly repressed in Detroit. It was the beginning of Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald’s continuing collaboration and also features Thomas Fehlmann (The Orb). It first appeared on the 3MB feat. Magic Juan Atkins album on Tresor in 1992, as did ‘Bassmental’ which is also present on the 12”, alongside ‘The Cosmic Courier’ over on the flip.

‘Jazz Is The Teacher’ is an absolute peach - pure gold, interstellar techno. It reminds me a lot of early Derrick May with the clanking FM sound, the percussion is ultra-funky and that big wonky, jazzy bassline is fabulous. Listening now, the production sounds deliciously raw compared to the slick Borderland stuff Atkins and von Oswald have been producing recently.

‘Bassmental’ is a decent trippy bleeping tune, while ‘The Cosmic Courier’ is just pure class. Proper soulful, emotive Detroit techno at its finest - driven by 303 bassline and enveloping synth that’s like rays of pure sunshine. No techno record collection should be without this record.
