Bill Laswell has appeared on and produced countless records to date, but this reissue takes us all the way back to 1983, and Bill’s first ever album. Baselines is a rubbery suite of jazz-funk for brass, wind, synthesisers, percussion, and Bill’s spacey, wobbly bass guitar, all produced dubstyle! Baselines is reissued by Tiger Bay.

8/10 Jack Customer review, 25th June 2017

Here, Bill Laswell takes a slightly different turn with the whole Material concept putting an album out under his own name, featuring his trademark slithering/darting bass and devil-may-care experimental whims, plus lots of funk. The opening track "Activate" features drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson driving things along like a huge steam locomotive that can be barely controlled as Laswell takes dangerous hairpin turns and unexpected twists with his bass, buoyed by all kinds of synth and found-sound madness by Michael Beinhorn.
