The Danish duo of Loke Rahbek (Croatian Amor, Lust For Youth etc.) and Christian Stadsgaard have reached their sixth studio album with ‘Great Many Arrows’. The title could be mistaken for that of a Prurient album but sonically there’s not the level of influence present here that there has been in previous work.
They’ve really expanded their sound palette on this album, utilising organs, cellos, violas, wind and other acoustic instruments to dramatic and often mournful effect, layering them on the electronic soundscapes which form the backdrops over which intense, cathartic vocals are sometimes spat - often sounding, tormented and desperate. The additional instrumentation really sets this apart from earlier work adding a dark, droning modern classical edge that never dominates the core of their sound. That is the emotional struggle between light and dark is very much intact. Gorgeous passages can become bludgeoned in bitterness and regret. This record elevates the duo beyond their harsher noise roots with an invigorated, more elegant, sophisticated and accessible sound that still retains their distinctive character and heavy emotional impact.
