Daktari by Shelly Manne

Upheld by a sprawling and eclectic range of worldly instrumentation is Daktari - West Coast drummer Shelly Manne's perfect TV series companion. The record still stands as a global fusion pioneer, and is cut from the best of electro and afro-funk. Percussive stabs and the use of the marimba bring this piece to life.

8/10 Jack 6th June 2017

Daktari is an original music score that is performed and conducted by Shelly Manne. He accomplishes this with the help of assorted musicians including, four woodwinds players and five percussionists. Keep percussion in mind when considering this album. Because there is lots of it. Daktari sounds like an experiment in ethnic African percussion music with the sounds of traditional jazz style melodies and solos mixed in. From an African percussion woodwind perspective it's a five, but, from a traditional jazz style Shelly Manne album it rates lower.
