‘Moon’s Milk In Final Phase’ was originally issued in 2012 on the Divine Frequency label and is comprised of four tracks from Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson and Danny Hyde’s sessions dating back to 2007. Apparently the music was originally intended to conclude Coil’s “Moon’s Milk” series. The EP has been long out of print and as with all things Coil, expensive to obtain on the secondhand market, but thankfully has now been reissued by Soleilmoon.
In parts I can certainly detect where Sleazy was heading with his Threshold Houseboys Choir and SoiSong projects with the fragments of synthesized speech, but generally speaking it’s not always obvious who’s doing what. Not that it matters, but that’s just an observation. Opening track ‘Moon's Milk (Waxing)’ is layered with fluttering strings and lively animal like sounds, as though the nocturnal creatures of the night have awoken and are playfully singing and dancing - badgers groaning and hooting owls. ‘Moon's Milk (Waxing)’ goes further into the night with pulsing electronics puncturing a dark droning backdrop like fluttering neon blue fireflies illuminating dark skies. Again there’s either processed or synthesized vocals that I assume is Sleazy’s work. ‘Moon's Milk (Eternal Phase)’ is probably the most obviously Coil sounding track that recalls the ‘Ape of Naples’ and ‘Backwards’ era. It really makes me anticipate that Jhon Balance’s voice will manifest, but alas, for obvious reasons it does not.
The final track was originally included on the original release as a secret unlisted track called ‘Therebealiensoutthere’ but on this edition appears as ‘Moon’s Milk (Dark Passing)’ which is strange as the original title marks it out as something quite different from the previous three tracks, which indeed it is and doesn’t seem to quite fit in with the flow and atmosphere of the other tracks. It’s a pretty crazy tune - like some sort of alien breakbeat tribal techno where strange lifeforms are making dense polyrhythms and beats out of space junk. One of the more obscure releases in the Coil universe, and well worth grabbing while it’s around.
