Sprinters to all intents and purposes are Wigan's answer to Real Estate. Now based in marginally more fashionable Manchester, the group play a high octane form of janglesome indie pop which suggests that Wigan is the sunniest place on earth. If on the Manchester scene Horsebeach bring the murk and sad then Sprinters are a little bit more jolly.

Here's an album of very pleasant jangle pop from Wigan's Sprinters. They do that thing a lot of other bands are doing at the moment which is yer Real Estate/Horsebeach type melancholic jangle pop. You can tell they are influenced by the former by the fact that they aren't afraid to insert an instrumental into their album and they represent the latter by the heavy usage of flange.

Theirs is a nascent spindly jangle that would benefit from better production and a couple of killer songs but gets away with it with oodles of charm. No particular song stands out as a winner  - the album drifts along on a haze of guitars chiming rather elegantly. The beefier driving 'Figure It Out' showcases where the band could be headed with lashings of jangly guitar piled onto an upbeat composition but as always with this music I enjoy the melancholy bits. 'Last Song' is perhaps my favourite wallow whilst 'Don't Care' has a chorus which on first listen seems to be obvious but soon gets itself caught 'neath your brain.

If you can't get enough jangle pop then add this to your pile. For the moment the band are in the Championship but given them a good close season and training regime they could soon be elevated to the jangle rock Premier league.
