He’s been working in this direction for a while now, but Dominick Fernow’s military-industrial-themed alias Vatican Shadow is now a certified techno project, as this new 12” is released by the Berghain kings themselves: Ostgut Ton! Rubbish Of The Floodwaters contains three broodingly intense tracks.

Dominick Fernow lands on Berghain in house label Ostgut Ton as Vatican Shadow with a 3-track 12”. This isn’t his first appearance on the label - he previously appeared remixing Function and apparently has a residency at the club. The record opens with the “Cocteau Twins / This Mortal Coil channelling” ‘They Deserve Death’ which has that evocative, sorrowful sound that runs through much of his Vatican Shadow work. Then we get the mid-paced, understated, deep techno of ‘Rubbish Of The Floodwaters’. Here brooding late night synths hover and float over skeletal drums, and a prominent echoing rim-shot, giving a real lost in darkness feeling, with glimmers of light sweeping in and out of the haze. It all sounds tailor made for the small hours on the Berghain dancefloor. As does the longing, melancholy of ‘Weapons Inspection’ which is similarly tooled for those introspective, moments when you're running out of steam on the floor - just when the dawn chorus comes alive and the milkman is doing his rounds.
