The Veldt haven’t released any new music for two decades.... until now! The ethereal, soulful, somewhat shoegazey band have a full-length soon to come this year, but they’ve broken the silence with the Symmetry / Slowdown single a drifty piece of goodness. 7” single on the Misra label.

- Symmetry / Slowdown by The Veldt
The Veldt were our great shoegaze discovery of 2016. A band who had been going for ages without anyone taking much notice making music that sounded somewhat like a cross between A R Kane and the Cocteau Twins. The press release for this US Record store Day single suggests this is their new music for years which makes me wonder what 'The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur' was as I thought that was new material. Anyway the fact that I can't detect between new and old material suggests that the Veldt are still pretty much at the top of their game.
On both tracks here they use that classic early AR Kane blueprint of making a right old racket and singing soulfully over the top. A lot of shoegaze bands these days don't make their guitars soar or make incredibly otherworldly feedback. Lead track here 'Symmetry' does just that and adds the sort of sing song but impenetrable vocal melody Liz Frazer was so adept at. Overleaf 'Slow Grind' is foggier with some serious MBV style wash outs and again tremendous effected guitar scree.
Good stuff which bodes well for an upcoming album promised in June this year.
