There's something in the water across the pond in Canada; A slew of creativity ranging from the likes of Drake to Caribou, to Arcade Fire to The Weeknd are dominating charts and invading the underground. Fellow native Anthene is no exception to the list, as the solo artist Brad Deschamps offers latest his ethereal full-length - Orchid.

8/10 Jamie Staff review, 26 April 2017

The second and last of today’s sparkling delights from hand-packaged-card-with-polaroid-design aesthetes Sound In Silence… is… another corker. That’s genuinely some outstanding work; an infrared photo of an orchid atop a soothing shade of green, it’s a stunner. The music is just as good, which comes on this disc from anthéne.

‘Orchid’ was created by Toronto lad Brad Deschamps -- in his own home mind you, the lazy and resourceful bugger… lazily resourceful, the best way to make ambient naturally -- using synths, guitar, effects pedals, samples… you know the kind of thing. OK.. well, it’s a hazy blend of electronics and electro-acoustics that sounds like an oak tree wilting under its own weight and a sweltering sun on an airless day.

Picture the lushest of green mixes of pasture and foliage as you try to find the merest spot of shade where you can slurp your half-melted ‘99’ and that’s the essence of this cd. You may even glimpse a faint sparkle of light glinting off a distant burbling brook (or beck). Synths drone heavily, then inertly, then listlessly. It’s music that sounds tired but happily so. It relaxes after a long walk up a big hill then sits contentedly in the shadow of a big old rock. It’s kinda nice and I am really looking forward to dozing off to it in the suntrap at the back of my house. Only 150 of these babies available of course.
