Best Troubador is a collection of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s paying tribute to one of his musical heroes the late Merle Haggard. Best Troubador flips through the back pages of the career of the late country star bringing fresh takes on some of his best work. Easy to tell that this has been a labour of love for the long smitten Will Oldham.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy just does what he likes these days. Gone are the times when a new BPB album would be an 'event' as such and I'm sure he's happy enough involving himself in projects like this which sees him covering songs by the late country legend Merle Haggard. He obviously has immense love for the material, the record is shiningly produced and his voice sits right at the front of the mix so you can pick up every intonation. A mistake could be allowing other people to sing. 'The Day the Rains Came' is a lovely tearjerkin' ballad but Will Oldham's voice is only there as background which begs the question what is an album on which Oldham neither writes nor sings?
Luckily he's mostly here and when he really gets inside a song such as ' I Always Get Lucky With You' the effects are mesmerising. It's an enjoyable romp through the back pages of Haggard's back catalogue but at double length you are going to either need to be a Will Oldham or Merle Haggard obsessive or a fan of the sort of semi traditional middle of the highway country Oldham seems to be happy mining at the moment.
