Convenience Trap by Surgeon

Surgeon’s burrowing into the depths of composed-on-the-fly live hardware techno has been going further and further recently. The four tracks you’ll find here on Convenience Trap have grown out of these explorations, so they are extra direct in their power-rhythm attacks on the listener. Fierce and firm Surgeon sound, as ever. 12” EP on Dynamic Tension.

Anthony Child is back on his own Dynamic Tension label with ‘Convenience Trap’ in four parts - utilizing techniques and taking inspiration from his live performances for four club tracks that have a creepy Omega Man, last man on earth sorta vibe. ‘Part 2’ does the job with galloping kicks and fizzing metallic drums that filter and sizzle over an eerie, zoned backdrop. ‘Part 2’ is a little less sepulchral with an oneiric atmosphere and drums that recall early Aphex Twin yet still sounds unmistakably Surgeon.

‘Part 3’ is a four to the floor banger with frantic bleeps, driving momentum and really gristly rubbery synth work that’s like chewing on rubber. ‘Part 4’ has some similar hallmark Surgeon sounds to earlier EPs ‘Patience’ and ‘Learning’ with flickering modular synth melodies. All in all, the EP sounds like a mixture between some of his older work combined with his more free live approach - now more refined and less raw than on his last album ‘From Farthest Known Objects’. If you were into ‘Bland Ambition’ then this follows on nicely - not in your face banging but all super deep and nuanced. Great stuff as ever.
