Incredibly heavy psych rock from Perth, Australia. Following up from their self-released debut album, Mt. Mountain follow the grandeur of their title with Dust. Slow building drones groan in and out before culminating into crushing and then expanding heavily doped up riffage, Atmospheric as... For fans of Earth.

7/10 Staff review, 26 April 2017

In what world is this a real band name? In this one, apparently. This Cardinal Fuzz goodie comes from Oz and is chock full of the usual non-surprises you know and love: psychedelic music waking from a slumber at a slow, measured pace, the heartbeat slowly realising it has a job to do today like any other, and then… the workday analogy ends as they curl their way into a brief screaming riff and a wandering coda of clean, grandiose guitars and pastoral singsong.

They’re one of those ones that loves to meander, with the ever-so-slow rhythm section peeling back the curtain on “Floating Eyes” for a track of slow licks (yes, I dare call them licks) and wistfully twee vocals. The heaviness is sparse and merely suggested, as the band prefer to commit themselves to the ether, their whistling tones very occasionally matched with whining feedback -- instead, they seem to be in love with striking the perfect chord and submerging into the slowest groove. Drone rock, baby: it’s a slow ascent that makes Mt. Mountain sound so nice, even if they’re never really on their way to a destination. An excellent choice for the slow fans amongst you.

9/10 Customer review, 13th December 2017

If you ever need the perfect soundtrack to a road trip across the Australian Outback, then this could be it.  Since forming five years ago, Mt. Mountain have built a reputation in their native Australia as one of the more compelling psych bands in the country.

On their latest studio album ‘Dust’, they give us four tracks that captures the atmosphere of the red/orange landscapes that consumes the Outback. The opening 17-minute title track builds at a slow, measured pace with a rhythmic percussive pulse setting the tempo with the haunting sounds of guitar drones and a flute adding to the eerie atmosphere. Then halfway through, the ominous clouds suddenly part and the band lets loose with a six ton blast of explosive sonic carnage before fading back into meditative eeriness with the vocals finally kicking in around the 13 minute mark. It gradually builds again for a couple of minutes before ominously unleashing a thunderous finale to a modern psych epic. The other side of ‘Dust’ is a much more quieter affair, but it doesn’t let up in reinforcing the mood and themes whilst retaining the quality and the dust-filled landscapes. “Floating Eyes” has a soothing, gentle flow to it with ghostly vocals, hypnotic hand-drums and guitar progressions carrying it through in such a calm manner. “Kokoti” drifts into a psychedelic haze of guitar, flute and organ drones for a couple of minutes before breaking into a light psych jam full of guitar jangles, flute lines and percussive reverberations before they take it home with wah-wah guitars and throbbing bass leading an atmospheric coda that almost touches on the crescendo of the title track. “Outro” closes the album peacefully with intoxicating instrumental patterns reverberating into the ether.

Overall, ‘Dust’ embodies the flickering sun on the horizon of the orangey-red desert plains, and the music of Mt. Mountain draws you in with such wonderful imagery and gentleness that it becomes a journey to truly embrace.
