Steve Jansen was of course the drummer in Japan, but this album is his debut solo record, first released ten years ago. That said, Slope does feature a whole host of guests, from Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Joan As Policewoman to Japan frontman David Sylvian himself. Lovely boutique art-pop, here receiving its first ever vinyl pressing, courtesy of Headcount Records. Limited to 300 copies.

This is a wonderful record. Jansen stages his talents as a songwriter, drum programmer and especially arranger. The vocal contributions integrate well but the art is with the arrangements. This is an intimate and delicate record, made of small sounds that create a very soothing atmosphere. It reminded me of some of the work that Harold Budd and David Sylvian have done, but it also has its own personality. I really have enjoyed it tremendously and I hope Steve Jansen continues to release more music.
