Well lo and behold! Gayle Brogan of Electroscope has popped her head above the parapet once again -- this time on Belgian label Morc Records (we haven't left the EU yet, you see). In so doing she confirms her title as the Scottish highlands’ very own Grouper. Murmurations is an album which places itself at the intersection of mystical folk and explorative drone, with Brogan’s voice being the delicious siren call.
Sounds of guitars, woozy accordion, woodwind and looping electronics set the backdrop for songs filtered through observations on nature and wildlife -- specifically birds. Oh joy of joys! So we have tracks inspired by redshanks, jackdaws, starlings, that talisman of summer the swallow, and phalaropes (which is apparently a slender-necked shorebird). The latter song is utterly, mesmerically beautiful -- complete with recordings of birdcall no less -- and lasts for nearly 12 minutes. Gorgeous.
