8/10 gbar Customer review, 16th August 2017
After their much-celebrated reunion in 2011, The Afghan Whigs shows no signs of stopping with In Spades, their second post-reunion release. Greg Dulli's voice is still as strained and passionate as it has ever been, the best examples of this is on tracks such as "Into The Floor" and "Arabian Heights", and it also shows that the band's songwriting is still as fresh and packed with new, exciting ideas as it was during their peak in the 1990s. There is the piano ballad "I Got Lost" for example, which is probably Dulli’s best ballad since “Faded” in Black Love, and the opening "Birdland” which is a slow-burner that sets the scene for the upcoming 35 minutes. The horns are a very useful addition to the band's arsenal, which provides the perfect contrast to Dulli's vocals, and it brings In Spades to life and makes these ten songs that are full of desperation and helplessness sound just a little bit more hopeful.
