Apparently this Ismael folk has been making waves in the electro funk scene but I can’t really detect that here. I guess hailing from the US, this producer sees their debut on Nous 12” disc label who have also seen the likes of Call Super and Karen Gwyer recently, so I guess this Ismael person must have something going on, right?
Oh boy, do they. This is possibly one of the best 12 inchers I’ve heard in a while. Some swirling detroit chords and a sketch of a beat act as a mechanistic overture intro to A2 ‘As She Walks By’, which steps things up a notch with a spectacular ~140 footwork / dub x-over tune complete with repeated downpitched vocal saying the titular phrase. This is followed by a bouncy broken beat techno track with extreme warped scraping noises as percussion, an industrial treat. Gonna skip over B1 because B2 ‘Shiel’ is a grooving but screechy banger that’s as close to electro as we’ve seen so far except with distorted hardcore kicks and did I mention the screeches?
