Ben Frost, everyone’s favourite purveyor of frightening and elemental music, has recently been exposed to new audiences via the hit TV show Fortitude, for which he has provided an original soundtrack. Features lots of sinister drone-shimmer and tense electronics, as well as an amazing cover of ‘Tainted Love’ starring the vocals of Mariam Wallentin. CD on Mute.

8/10 Phil Staff review, 15 March 2017

Ben Frost is a man. Fortitude is a TV programme. Ben Frost wrote the music to said programme. I'm writing this become I'm the only person here who has seen the show and coincidentally I'm a fan of Ben Frost. In case you've not seen said programme it's a who(orwhatinthiscase)dunnit set in Svalbard in sunny Arctic Norway. It's bleak, extremely cold and you'll want to turn the heating up when you watch it. Needless to say lots of bad things happen and you spend most of the time wondering who's gonna cark it next. There's fuck all to do in the middle of the Arctic so the good folk of Fortitude just drink themselves stupid and get up to bad shit and die.

What's not to like?

To almost tie in with season 2 which came out in January Mute have released the icy music to the show by snowy monikered Ben Frost. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere. The show is eerie and dark and Frost's soundtrack expectedly accompanies the visuals very well (him being a massive dark overlord and that). Dark bleak soundscapes penetrate the icy winds with electronic (and sometimes synthy) atmospherics, things of strings and throbbing dark drones . There's a whopping 40 tracks on here but most are short and some are dialogue from the show.

The music is generally short vignettes of extremely powerful and emotive dark ambient music (if not a little harsh at times). It works well though and when you watch the show the music just adds to the tension cos it's socockingintense. Oh and in case you were wondering this is a Ben Frost album and not the full Fortitude soundtrack so the Wildbirds And Peacedrums track, which is the opening music to the show, isn't on here so don't buy expecting to hear that 'river' song or you'll be sorely disappointed.
