2017 is probably as good a year as any for bleak new material from long running dark pop trio Depeche Mode. These synth pop veterans still have a huge following and have here hooked up with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys etc) for some grandiose worrying about the state of the world. Nice to have them still around.

8/10 Richard Customer review, 24th March 2017
As a teenager Depeche Mode were an important band to me. 'Violator' was, and still is, a record that I regularly return to again and again. And although they've never quite managed to reach those dizzy heights again, 'Spirit' might just be the closest they've come since 'Songs of Faith and Devotion'.
Much has been made of the political leanings here - very much not alt-right (or fascist to give them their proper title!) & the LP does include a number of tracks where the Mode have a damn good moan about corporations not paying their fair share and the apathy of the people when faced with such continued austerity. This hasn't gone down well in many corners, but I really quite like the fact that someone is using their influence to produce political statements such as these. There needs to be more of it in music I say, as there is enough 'escapism' out there if you really want it. And the tracks work too - mainly thanks to Martin Gore's excellent input.
It is true to say that the more traditional tracks like 'Eternal' that hark back to their heyday make this such a great record, but good on them for speaking out.
The deluxe 2cd version also features 5 remixies which are damn fine too. Might just have to dig out 'Violator' again later. Nice one!
