Originally released in 1996, Illadelph Halflife was the third studio album from one of the definers of the hip hop genre The Roots. After 19 albums and countless co-productions with everyone from Erykah Badu to Elvis Costello it’s a great treat to head back to the jazzy sampling roots of The Roots.

I personally enjoy this record from top to bottom of all of the ones I have of the Roots (all except the first, Organix). I don't really like to say what is someone's best, because that has too many meanings. But this one, I've played from intro to outro and have truly enjoyed it fully: both the introspective songs and the lyrical prowess tracks. This is a complete Roots record, one much more serious than their previous, and thus amazing in its own light. It's a shame they didn't put out 2 or 3 albums with this style.
