Sometimes a change is as good as a rest. Jane Weaver's early records (including those by her excellent band Misty Dixon) were lovely under the radar folky affairs but it wasn't until she started to invoke in vogue kraut and psych influences on 'The Silver Globe' that some overground success came her way. Modern Kosmology threatens to continue down that cosmic path (just look at that title). Sure to be one of 2017's more anticipated releases.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 17 May 2017
In which Jane Weaver does everything she should do to make a popular album in 2017. Let's run through the checklist. Neu like metronomic drumming? Check. Wibbly wobbly synths? Check. Vocals that recall Stereolab/Broadcast? Check. A cosmic/kosmiche feel? Check.
But my slight jadedness when it comes to the amount of artists that are content to mine the kraut/psych furrow should not put you off a record that is excellently put together and benefits hugely from Weaver's lovely floaty voice and knack with a carefully planned out hook. The album is a series of soft synth shuffles which often hark back to the more laid back and tuneful elements of the Silver Apples and United States of America. The music is pulsing and simple with drawn out melodies and all those analogue synths you know and worship. The title track with have those who miss Broadcast swooning in the aisles whilst 'Did You See Butterflies?' will do the exact same for lost Stereolab fans.
The album is better realised than its predecessor 'The Silver Globe' which tip toed more hesitantly in this direction. It's as if the warm reception to that album has given Weaver the confidence to get fully immersed in her new sound and here she grabs it with both hands making what is probably going to be her signature record. It's true that if I hear yet another album using these exact same influences this year I'm going to wibble a synth along to a metronomic drum pattern in frustration. Weaver though gets through the gate as she writes nice songs and this is perfectly put together with a panache that may not be found elsewhere. So many people are going to love this.
