Silver Shadows play an 80’s-imbued form of post-punk, richly awash with synths as well as with indie-pop guitars. They are also notable for having three vocalists taking a lead role, leading to some fairly wonderful harmonies. Cold Plastic is the band’s debut full-length album, and it is released on vinyl by Volar.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 16 March 2017You could play the new album from the Beatles on our office stereo and Phil wouldn’t notice. He managed to get through an entire Disco Inferno record yesterday before asking if we could play it. I on the other hand hear the odd thing and when Ian is in the office we are never short of shoegaze and dream pop so I noticed this thing churning away yesterday. Silver Shadows are another West Coast US band who still think it’s 1984 and here create a series of soundscapes that owe much to early Cocteau Twins and the bleaker parts of the Siouxie and the Banshees catalogue. On ’You Were Right’ they impress with their sheer speed of execution, this belts along with powerful drums and some seriously Robin Guthrie guitars trying to keep up. The other aspect is that they have three singers so these harmonies can sometimes help make everything sound like Warpaint fulfilling all their 4AD fantasies. They are sometimes so intent on nailing the sound of a raincoat trailing in a puddle that they fail to write memorable songs but when they get it right on the ridiculously Cocteau Twins ish ‘Fragile Dawn’ they really nail the kind of tension that those semi-goth bands managed to conjure up.
