Northcape is an effortless specialist in the kind of melodic electronica that tugs gently at the heartstrings while also softly propelling the feet. His work has something in common with the thoughtful music of Boards Of Canada. Captured From Static is the third full-length album Northcape has released to date, and it’s out on Sun Sea Sky Productions.
8/10 Clinton Staff review, 22 February 2017
Who wants an ear soothe? Well my hand is in the year. Northcape provides a wonderful brand of soft and loving electronica that evokes snow capped peaks and grand drives across mountain passes. The press release is spouting unbelievable bollocks by suggesting Northcape defines a genre and sets a standard (certainly Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss are just two names who have done this kind of stuff better in the recent past) however Northcape does provide an excellent facsimile of this sound.
For fans of Boards of Canada in particular this is going to be a treat. Beats are kept to a minimum and attention is paid to using wonderfully warm synths to create wintery atmospheres which shift and alter like the sky on a bright winters day. It also has that instantly enjoyable sense of nostalgia particularly on album standout 'Pastoral' with its delicious four chord motif and deliciously chewy squiggles of synth. It probably lacks the depth and variation that would come with, say, a Boards of Canada or Bonobo album but this is a very pleasant ear pleaser.
