Salutations by Conor Oberst

Bright Eyes' lead quiverer Conor Oberst's last album Ruminations was a a home produced, stark work featuring just his own voice, guitar and piano. He still wanted to record with a band though and so headed down to Malibu to record Salutations with a full rocking band in tow. This includes band versions of all the Ruminations tracks plus seven additional songs.

All of the songs from "Ruminations" are on this album, but it is a different mix with a back-up band. It makes the songs sound more like Bright Eyes, which I really like, but then again, I also love the songs the way they are done on "Ruminations." The melodies on this album are catchy and bright, but the themes are pretty dark. Many artists seem to grow more content as they achieve success and approach middle age, but Conor has managed to both refine his craft and climb even deeper into an existential hole.
