- Dear Esther (Original Game Soundtrack) by Jessica Curry
9/10 John Mounsey 3rd March 2017
This is the first ever (and long-awaited!) physical release of Jessica Curry's memorable score for the "Walking Simulator" video game, "Dear Esther". The finalised version of the game itself was released on Windows PC format back in 2012 - with a digital-only soundtrack release surfacing sometime after that. Those familiar with the game will without doubt recall Curry's haunting, piano-led soundtrack score - which plays a key role as the mysterious story unfolds on the island (where the game is set).
Since this score Jessica Curry has gone on to win a BAFTA award for her incredible score to "Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" (another essential purchase and already available on CD and vinyl). This earlier work on Dear Esther is, by comparison a more low-key affair. However! Having said that it still strikes a distinct emotional core - and stands alone as a moving experience, regardless of whether you have played the game or not.
A special note must be made about the stunning artwork on this vinyl release! Designed in-house at The Chinese Room (the games studio responsible for Dear Esther and "Rapture..") - this is one beautiful release.
My only ever-so-slight criticism (if you can call it that.. more of an observation really) is that the score is somewhat repetitive (at times) - so 9 out of 10 here, just a shade short of perfection. For games music enthusiasts, this is an essential release!
