9/10 Ant Staff review, 23 March 2017
‘Miccaotli’ is the second release from Andrea Taeggi under his Gondwana alias. The first of which ‘Aum’ appeared on Opal Tapes in 2015. You may recall his recent album for Type, or be familiar with his work alongside Koenraad Ecker as Lumisokea.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve played this extended 6-track EP - it’s bloody great. Bursting with intricate, clattering metallic percussion at its core and embellished with superb futuristic sound design, and nervous, flickering melodies. The beats/rhythms feel remarkably fresh - no mean feat in this day and age. It’s the sort of precision beat science where the drums appear to be constructed from razor sharp Samurai steel - slicing in a way that’s reminiscent of early Photek - and yet don’t adhere to any sort of standard breakbeat music template. There’s a restless sense of funk where there are loops to cling onto, yet they seem be be constantly mutating into dynamic geometric shapes - despite a sort of mechanical exterior they feel like a living thing. ‘Miccaotli’ is possibly the standout tune for me, but really there’s not a duffer on here. Proper fresh sounding robo-funk, that sounds like it’s been beamed in from the future. Recommended.
