Gqom is the raw n’ rough house sensation that’s sweeping the nation (of South Africa), and Dominowe is a sharp Durban producer whose stuff is even more impressive when you bear in mind that the guy is nineteen. SiyaThakatha shows off Dominowe’s different gqom styles in a fierce and remarkable flurry of beat power. 12” EP on Gqom Oh!
8/10 Ant Staff review, 08 February 2017
That there ‘Gqom Oh! The Sound of Durban Vol. 1’ compilation was bloody great wasn’t it eh?!?! I proper loved it, me. No doubt it’s soundtracked the shaking of many boys and girls bums across the land. Not taking shitting into account, it was what rear ends were made for.
The opening tune ‘Africa’s Cry’ on said album was the first Gqom track I ever heard and was by this fellow Dominowe - who now has a full record to himself. He has a pretty distinctive sound - although there’s similarities with Grime, UK Funky and dark “tribal” techno, there’s a unique energy to this music - there’s no messing about - it’s purely aimed squarely at the feet. Whether you happen to be in a club or just working off some pies at home, you’d have to have rigamortis not to move to these urgent, infectious polyrhythms.
