Kairon; IRSE! (yes, a band with two different kinds of punctuation in their name) are a Finnish gang of spacey, shoegazey, but ultimately proggy rockers. Ruination is their second album of outer / inner space explorations, with grander ambitions and more complex song structures than ever before. CD and double LP editions on Svart.

8/10 Les Customer review, 21st April 2017

Being of a certain age, buying an album that has been described as prog rock holds no fear or embarrassment for me! I bought this album after reading a review in the Guardian which refers to Kairon; IRSE! as Nordic funk and freakout jazz, that got my interest.

But on this album Kairon; IRSE! are looking more forward than back, although at times I am reminded of Yes, Focus and Gentle Giant (70's prog bands). The sound they produce is a complex multilayered sound but it is never overpowering or confusing. Songs are built around strong melodic phrases which keep the songs centred. To be honest I am not sure what the lyrics of the songs mean since they are buried low in the mix, however I think that the lyrics work well adding both voice and texture. Kairon; IRSE! show that they are a confident band who are willing to build on what has gone before, but not dwell all that much on the past thus giving the listerner a refence point but not a rout map.

My advice; go and buy it and enjoy even if you have not got the faintest idea as the prog rock bands I mention.
