Tobias Hellkvist has been composing richly-textured electroacoustic suites for some years now. Kaskelot is an EP that went down very well in Japan in 2011: now it gets a bulked-up reissue, with new remixes by artists like Chihei Hatakeyama and offthesky, each one of whom takes the source material in an interesting new direction. Edition of 500 CDs on the Home Normal label.

Unlike the extended reissue of Tobias Hellkvist’s ‘Vesterhavet’ also on Home Normal, this reissue is not so drone based and includes a number of remixes from some of the giants of the ambient/drone scene (if you can have such a thing – stadium drone anyone?), including two of my faves, Porya Hatami & Chihei Hatakeyama. In fact remixes take up the vast majority of the running time.
The original source material is based around gentle piano, with all 4 pieces merging together to give us a 16 minute suite of a neo-classical nature. Then the remixes kick in. The Segue remix gives us gentle beats, Steve Pacheco’s 12 minute mix is pretty minimal and very beautiful, & Simon Bainton brings the drone. Porya Hatami’s & Chihei Hatakeyama’s remixes are just wonderful and both manage to sound uniquely like their own work whilst retaining the beauty inherent in the original compositions. And then you’ve still got Chris Herbert and Offthesky ready to tickle your ears. Blimey! Well tasty stuff.
