Tobias Hellkvist has been composing richly-textured dense drone suites for some years now. Vesterhavet was initially self-released last year, but Home Normal liked it enough to give the full extended version of the piece a proper physical release, which is what you see before you. Vesterhavet will suit any fan of thick but melodic big-room ambience. Edition of 200 CDs.

- Vesterhavet (Extended) by Tobias Hellkvist
8/10 Richard 19th June 2017
The rather excellent Home Normal offer up more ambient goodness via this extended reissue of Tobias Hellkvist’s ‘Vesterhavet’. 6 tracks that do what most good ambient gubbins do. You know the ones – they start slowly before slowly unfolding in pillows of drift and drone that gently increases in volume before fading out once more. Opener ‘Vesterhavet I’ is case in point. 13 mins of bliss, if that is your thing.
Most of the other tracks follow suit, with a number variations on the pitch and intensity of the drone. If you immerse yourself in this then it is hugely rewarding, and on a stonking hot summers day like today you could do a lot worse than find yourself some shade, pop in the headphones and let Mr Hellkvist transport you away from modern life for an hour.
