With his releases on R&S, Ninja Tune, and Werk Discs London based producer Moiré has always pushed left of centre in techno production, swapping straight fours for screwed and off kilter beats that mysteriously achieve the same rhythm. On his latest full length through Ghostly International he pushes further into IDM beat work territories, working with MC DRS and “grime poet” James Massiah.

So I’m late to the party, and have no idea what Moire’s music sounds like. Sorry, world. I remember that Shelter was a big deal when it came out, and here’s the follow up on Ghostly so he must be doing well. Jeez, worst review intro ever. Those things like words and insight aren’t really coming today.
‘Sequence 1’ kicks things off with dubbish slow house feels, while a gungy bass barbles up every now and then. Airy ‘ambient’ synth chords hover over adding a layer of sorta rainy pleasantness, but overall this one is kinda stale. The next one breaks up the beat a little, with a cyclic vocal sample over the top, meh it’s ok until this DRS guy unleashes some great verses over the top. No idea who he is, but he’s got this slightly intense whispery style, like the Spaceape but with more regularity in its rhythm. Mmmm. Things start to pick up after then, with the overlaid phrases of ‘Secret Window’ feeling pretty propulsive, completely erasing the vapidity of track 1 with serious conviction.
I quite like the more dingey house ones, they’re kinda like Hieroglyphic Being if he didn’t go full 135bpm all the time and 1000% distortion. I think it’s in part due to Moire’s love of clunky but occasionally crazy or detuned synths to take the role of basslines, but also with the explosive kick-hat combos he injects. I began to start getting tired of the house beat that dominates so much of this, until the funky tinges of ‘Magma Dream’ entered. Fans of folks like Jay Daniel will find much love here. Maybe I’m a bit convinced by this guy now.
