None of what I am about to say takes anything away from the quality of Julia Holter's music which I think is excellent particularly on 'Have You In My Wilderness but I'm having a hard time knowing what the point is of this record. It's part of a series of live-in-the-studio albums on Domino sister label Domino Documents and seems not much more than an exercise in squeezing further sales out of reasonably successful artists. As an interim or bonus album maybe but just in case you are looking forward to a brand new work or radically altered recordings of previous work then I'm going to have to let you down gently.

What it is is a live recording of Holter and band running through a career spanning selection of tracks. Good...but not as good as the album versions. This is particularly true of the 'Have You In My Wilderness' tracks which lack the breadth and scope of the originals. If you want spend an hour listening to Holter perform a bunch of tracks pretty well and nicely recorded then please go ahead and purchase. For newcomers head straight to 'Have You In My Wilderness' and for the rest of us best just wait for her next studio album before getting too excited.
