ADULT. (they always spell it like that) are a husband and wife neo-comedy duo from Detroit who make kind of a lets say unconventional take on dance music with each calling out over some cheesy keys. This, their first for Mute is a collaborative effort with guests including Michael Gira (Swans), Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens) and the bloke from Nitzer Ebb.
7/10 Clinton Staff review, 16 March 2017In our description for this record I’ve labelled Adult. as a ‘neo comedy duo’ which is strange as I can’t hear any comedy here and this is for the best as Adult. have gone truly bleak on this their seventh album and sound all the better for it. They sing odd and repetitive phrases over industrial leaning electronica which on ‘Breathe On’ swirls round and round and gets more and more intense so that you feel somehow swept away with it all. I’m also a bit partial to opener ‘P rte M ss ng’ with it’s minimal Kraftwerk synth pulsing providing a comfort blanket for Nicola Kuperus’ softly repeating vocal phrasing. Throughout Adult. find new ways of being weird - every synth is off-kilter, vocals are placed at seemingly random intervals over the music and the music has a dark beating heart so that they never write linear pop songs as such. It’s a dark and disturbing world but also listening and with the sort of innovative clanking synth pop that harks back to the golden age of futurism. It’s good to be weird and Adult. seem to have got even weirder here.
