Northcape’s new album Exploration And Ascent is reportedly the result of an inspiring trip around the Himalayas, undertaken by Northcape main man Alastair Brown. Appropriately, this is a record of sweet electronics rising toward the light: bright and brave ambient melodicism. CD release on Sun Sea Sky Productions.

Lovely, calming electronica that ‘takes you somewhere...’ That’s Clint’s take on things as those words hang in the air and he drifts off… I would be inclined to agree. Northcape’s ‘Exploration and Ascent’ takes you somewhere, somewhere… nice. Somewhere similar to the places that Boards of Canada have so helpfully taken us all in the past, at some point. But I am being rude! Let me introduce you… Northcape is one Alastair Brown. Alastair recently circled the Himalayan mountains and came back refreshed and inspired, and with a new sack brimming with samples ready to be subjected to his melodic magic. Although he sourced a fair few from freesound.org too.
Those dusty electronics have been wafted clean by the mountain air, keyboard melodies rising toward sunlit snowy peaks. ‘The First Crossing of the Watershed’ has those warming electronic keys suspended in the clouds as a sparse drumbeat picks the path of least resistance to the craggy heights. Pretty delightful stuff, and one to immerse yourself in while sipping your favourite herbal brew.
