8/10 Staff review, 24 January 2017

If I have to hear one more piece of kraut/psych rock today I think I'll...erm....erm...go and squiggle a synth or something. Probably escaping my ire are Brian Jonestown Massacre who seem to be in a race to release the most amount of records in one calendar year.

This one though has a difference in that it's a 12" rather than a 10". Also the lead track is a rather mesmerising piece of dreamy kraut with a repetitive bass pattern and metronomic drums. Out of this appears a fizzy synth drone and eventually distorted Newcombe vocals. They are a long way away from their earlier melodic brand of 60's psych but generally in a good place I think.

Overleaf we get a rather dubby piece called 'Melody's Actual Echo Chamber' which has some deep dark grooves and appears to be changing speed right in front of your very eyes. An odd take on grey, distilled dub but rather endearing. The final track is a re-work of the first one with some more energetic vocals sung as is often their wont in a foreign tongue.

BJM are soaking up European influences these days and so are in thrall to Germany (in particular) rich tapestry of murky groove bands. They still manage to sound timeless though.
